The Dangerous Agreement Between Fatah and Hamas

by Elliott Abrams
April 29, 2011

The agreement between Fatah and Hamas may break down, as previous agreements have. But the deal recently announced will nevertheless do grave harm to the chances for peace. It brings into doubt the willingness of the Palestinian Authority to fight terrorism and therefore undermines the American program of training PA security forces. Moreover, it appears to allow the entry of Hamas into the PLO, the body charged with peace negotiations with Israel. My views are explained in today’s Weekly Standard.

    Mr. Abrams

What are you are saying carries a lot of truths to it. That said however, I think the positive thing about this agreement is that we will have more unified PA to work with and make a peace agreement with . Moreover, the PA under Abbas, will have a better chance of making Hamas part of the peace as oppose to being a spoiler of Peace. This agreement, if it sticks, will also take away some leverage Iran has within Hamas or inside the Palestinians territories. Over all I think it is a good for peace to have a unified Palestinian leadership .

No, the palestinians cannot continue to stand divided simply to appease the Israeli lobby. If the U.S. is sincirely interested in Paleatinians as a poeple, then it should encourage full integration; where, howveer, it is on the prompting of the Israeli interests, than it should receded to the Israeli corner and allow genuine peace makers to hold fort.

The Obama Administration , by its weak to nonexistant “stances” regarding Israel’s security , has allowed a cynical belief by Hamas and anti-Israel factions in Fatah and the PA that nothing will stand in the way of this union from hell .

    Unfortunately , they’re probably right .
