The Disgrace of the UN Human Rights Council

by Elliott Abrams
March 19, 2012

Today the so-called UN Human Rights Council will add to its history of anti-Israel bias and invective by listening to an official spokesman for terror.  The Council is scheduled to hear from Ismail al-Ashkar, a Hamas “lawmaker” whose moderate, peace-loving views are summed up by this Kuwaiti report from his appearance at a protest rally in Gaza in 2010.  There he not only attacked Israel but also the possible participation of the PLO in peace negotiations with Israel: “Ismail Al-Ashkar, a leader of Hamas, addressed the demonstrators, condemning the negotiations as ‘a crime and treason’ against the Palestinian people.”

The long and disgraceful saga of the UN human rights bodies–first the Human Rights Commission, and now the Human Rights Council–continues. I assume that if this man appears at the rostrum the U.S. delegates will withdraw from the room. That is fine, but we need to withdraw from participation in the Commission entirely so long as it continues to spend its time attacking Israel–and now, listening to terrorist representatives do so.

Don’t you realise that no one is listening? Today it’s fashionable to be anti -semitic/Israel because that’s what everyone is. It’s also the “Palestinian” reson d’etre. They were created to be trouble for Israel.

Do you not think there is a valid reason why “Israel bashing” occurs at the UN Human Rights Council? Israel epitomizes human rights violation.

Maybe the “disgrace” lies elsewhere. Namely, with our professional diplomatic class who continue to treat the U.N. and its various arms seriously when the rest of us know it has long ago outlived its usefulness.

Your writings are disgusting, I used to read them because I wanted to hear different voices and ideas and not remain biased towards world’s matters. But It seems that there is no end in sight for your blind defense of Israel and devastating US policies in the Middle East ( and particularly in case of Israelis-Palestinians and related to my country Iran) , SO I see it is pointless to read your notes because you just see the whole world as black and white, Whoever is not with US, Israel and the neo-cons is black and the US gang is white. Actually I am happy to see dictators like Mubarak or those despots of Saudi Arabia or that miserable host of US-5th fleet- Shekh Hamad of Bahrain, also Yemen’s Saleh and the unlawful president of Palestine are in the US team. It makes me believe that whoever is against the US is righteous… because all those dicators who will certainly topple someday in future, are all US clients…
