Morning Update: Wildfires and Iraq
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson argues in a blog post that efforts to fight the California wildfires are being shortchanged by the war in Iraq. “Today, as the fires rage, California has National Guard men, women, and critical equipment thousands of miles away in Iraq. They need to come home,” he writes.
Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani predicted he will be able to stop illegal immigration within three years of taking office by increasing border security (AP). “If people come to the border and figure they can’t get in, they’ll stop.”
John Edwards again attacked Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) for her stances on Iraq and Iran in light of the CBO projections the war will cost over a trillion dollars.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said in a speech in Iowa yesterday that he envisions “lily pad” military bases, each with equipment and a “skeleton crew,” throughout the Middle East (DesMoines Register).
