Morning Update: Aiding Pakistan
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on Fox News Sunday said Washington should tell Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf conditional U.S. aid to his country “may be terminated” unless Pakistan hunts al-Qaeda “in a determined and effective way” and unless free elections are held.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), also appearing on the show, said he would not threaten to cut off aid, because “if you play that last card and it doesn’t work, then obviously you have no leverage whatsoever.”
On CNN’s Late Edition, Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) discussed his legislation that says the United States should consider eliminating funding for the P-3 surveillance aircraft and other fighter jets for Pakistan “that have nothing do with us fighting terrorism.”
On Meet the Press, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) defended his statement in 2004 that “there’s not much of a difference between my position on Iraq and George Bush’s position at this stage.”
Mike Huckabee fought his reputation for lacking foreign policy experience on Face the Nation, highlighting his record (PDF) dealing with multinational trade agreements and travel to over 40 countries.
