Morning Update: Appreciating the Surge
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), winner of the Republican primary in New Hampshire, and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) have an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal today saying the troop surge has worked in Iraq. They wrote that “conditions in that country have been utterly transformed from those of a year ago” as a result of the surge.
AP reports that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who had touted his broad foreign policy experience on the campaign trail, is expected to announce today he is dropping his bid (AP) for the Democratic nomination. Richardson finished fourth in both the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary. He has sought to distinguish his campaign from the three top-tier Democratic contenders by saying he would immediately remove all U.S. troops from Iraq if elected. MSNBC notes that Richardson’s campaign has yet to confirm the reports.
