The Immigration Balancing Act
Broader economic concerns appear to have nudged aside immigration as a top campaign issue in recent days for Republican candidates, who have focused almost exclusively on economic stimulus in light of stock market volatility and talk of a recession.
The January 29 Florida primary offers a fresh test of the relevance of the immigration issue, given the state’s large Latino voting population. To date, says a new CFR.org Daily Analysis brief, immigration has not emerged as a decisive issue in party nominating contests, although it remains important to GOP voters.
To further explore the issue, readers are invited to attend an upcoming discussion on the issue of immigration as it relates to the presidential campaign, with Edward Alden of the Council on Foreign Relations, Adam Roberts of the Economist, and Cristina Rodriguez of New York University School of Law. Dean Thomas Cooley of New York University Stern School of Business will moderate the conversation, which will take place Tuesday, February 5 at the NYU Stern School of Business at 6:30 pm.
