In response to CFR.org’s Backgrounder, “The Role of Delegates in the U.S. Presidential Nominating Process,” reader Margaret Sears writes:
Since the Democratic delegate tally is currently close, there are rumblings about the superdelegates possibly being the deciding factor in choosing the party nominee. If the superdelegates were put into place to avoid a “brokered convention,” then the party should follow the rules and not reactionary emotion. This election is important to many people, and the rules set in place should be followed…and explained beforehand to thegeneral public.
