Morning Update: Obama, McCain Roll On
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) each won their respective party primaries in Wisconsin Tuesday. In Wisconsin, a rare state where Republican delegates are distributed proportionally, McCain won 55 percent of the Wisconsin vote, while Mike Huckabee won 37 percent. McCain also won the Washington State Republican primary (Bloomberg) .
On the Democratic side, Obama won 58 percent of the vote to Clinton’s 41 percent in Wisconsin. Obama also won the Democratic caucus in his home state of Hawaii by a wide margin Tuesday, picking up another 20 delegates.
According to exit polls (CNN), 45 percent of Wisconsin Democrats named the economy as the most important issue facing the country, while health care and the war in Iraq were each listed by 26 percent. 41 percent of Wisconsin Republicans picked the economy (CNN) as the most important issue, while 24 percent named Iraq, 18 percent listed terrorism, and 15 percent chose illegal immigration, exit polls show.
60 percent of Democrats most concerned about Iraq voted for Obama.
72 percent of Wisconsin Democrats said U.S. trade with other countries causes jobs to leave the United States. Of those, 57 percent picked Obama, while 41 percent chose Clinton, according to exit polls. 17 percent of Democrats said U.S. trade with foreign countries creates jobs, and nine percent said trade had no effect on the job market.
Exit polls also showed 56 percent of Wisconsin Democratic voters believing Obama would “improve relations with the rest of the world.” 40 percent said Clinton would improve foreign relations.
39 percent of Wisconsin Republican voters said illegal immigrants should be deported, while 32 percent said illegal immigrants should have a path to citizenship. Another 27 percent favored a temporary worker program, according to exit polls.
According to exit polls, 76 percent of Wisconsin Republican voters had never served in the military. 24 percent said they had. Of military voters, 63 percent said they voted for McCain.
