Morning Update: Energy Policy

Hoping to ease high gas prices, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) on Sunday announced a plan to crack down on “excessive energy speculation.” The plan includes a measure to fully close the so-called “Enron Loophole,” which the Obama camp says prevents the Commodity Futures Trading Commission from effectively investigating instances where market speculation might be driving up prices.

Morning Update: McCain on Oil Drilling

Though Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has long opposed drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska, he indicated Wednesday he is willing to reconsider that position (Springfield News Leader). “I would be more than happy to examine it again,” McCain said at a town hall meeting in Missouri.

Paul Bows Out

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) ended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination late lasRon Pault week, saying he will now channel the energy of his presidential campaign into “long-term efforts to take back our country.” Paul has said he will not endorse presumptive Republican nominee John McCain. Paul, whose campaign enjoyed massive grassroots political support, advocated a series of libertarian political and economic reforms. He called for a decidedly non-interventionist approach to international affairs.
