Morning Update: Olympic Pressures

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) said President Bush should keep the option of boycotting the opening ceremony of the Olympics “firmly on the table.” He said President Bush should decide to attend based on whether China takes “steps to help stop the genocide in Darfur and to respect the dignity, security, and human rights of the Tibetan people.”

Debating U.S.-China Trade

robert_scott.jpgIn this week’s CFR.org Online Debate, the Economic Policy Institute’s Robert E. Scott says the United States must “put some backbone in our trade policy” toward China. He says the United States should toughen trade laws to “ensure that systematic subsidies that benefit all exporters are countervailed.”He also calls on Congress to spearhead an independent government agency “with the resources and authority to file fair trade cases in the United States and at the WTO.” Such an agency, he says, could help create a “level playing field.”

Morning Update: Debating Taiwan

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) released a statement Monday congratulating Taiwanese President-elect Ma Ying-Jeou and calling on China to “reduce the military threat to Taiwan by drawing back the missiles it has deployed in southeast China and by other security confidence-building measures.” He also said the United States should “reopen blocked channels of communication with Taiwan officials.”

Morning Update: McCain on Korea, China

On Face the Nation yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) discussed U.S.-North Korean relations in light of allegations that North Korea assisted Syria in its attempt at developing nuclear capabilities. McCain says the United States should continue negotiations (PDF) with North Korea, but it should hold China accountable in part for the behavior of the governments of North Korea, Sudan, and Myanmar.
