Morning Update: Iran Dominates Debate

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s rivals, trailing badly in polls, sharpened attacks on her foreign policy views, especially over her recent vote on Iran, in last night’s Democratic debate. Her main rivals, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and John Edwards, attacked her on everything from her stance on NAFTA, upon which Obama said she has switched positions, to her vote in favor of the Kyl-Lieberman amendment on Iran.

Morning Update: Tough GOP Language

Though attacks on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton were a main focus of discussion in last night’s Republican debate, GOP presidential hopefuls also discussed a few foreign policy topics. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), who is against the war in Iraq, said Sen. Clinton (D-NY) is “endorsing the same policy” in Iraq that already exists.

Morning Update: Differing Global Visions

Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and John McCain (R-AZ) outline their foreign policy agendas in the new issue of Foreign Affairs. In his essay, McCain reiterates his support for military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and warns against the “‘Talibanization’ of Pakistani society.” McCain criticizes China’s lack of military transparency in the piece, and calls for the implementation of free trade agreements with Malaysia and Thailand.

Up Next, Pakistan’s Crisis

With the debate on Iraq strategy now fully reengaged by a partisan Congress, U.S. politicians may soon have to weigh in on another international crisis of comparable importance and complexity. Pakistan is the scene of political turmoil and there is almost daily violence between government and extremist forces in the Western tribal lands. The country’s Supreme Court is preparing to decide whether President Pervez Musharraf can run for reelection in what the Financial Times calls “perhaps the most important decision in its history.” At the same time, Musharraf is trying to work out a power-sharing deal with exiled former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, after a public backlash followed the deportation of another former prime minister trying to return from exile, Nawaz Sharif.
