I think it's pessimistic to say that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, and even more pessimistic to say that sanctions would not have been effective. I think it's pessimistic to say that the steel industry needs tariffs if US jobs are to be plentiful. I think it’s pessimistic to say that you have to bomb the %#$^ out of a country to get them to be democratic.

In general, there's a wide split between the hard-headed, even bearish Economist writing on finance and the economy, and its Weekly Standard-with-a-public-school-accent voice on anything to do with US politics.
